Veteran Resource Centers @ Los Angeles Public Libraries

The Los Angeles Public Library is recruiting Veteran Resource Center (VRC) volunteers to assist veterans and their families in obtaining resources related to healthcare, education, employment, housing, and other benefits that they have earned through military service.

In partnership with the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), your public library is pleased to help veterans and their families. Veterans and their families can learn about state and federal education, employment, housing, health, disability and other benefits that may be available to them at the Veteran Resource Centers located at various Los Angeles Public Libraries.

The special focus of this project is to provide information to reintegrate California veterans into the California workforce and our communities in order to provide veterans the quality of life of other Americans.

The goals for this project are to:

  1. Provide veteran benefits and local service information to veterans and family members, and links to other organizations serving veterans especially local County Veteran Service Offices, CalVet and the Federal VA.
  2. Increase registered veterans in the CalVet Reintegration system.
  3. Increase California veteran benefit claims.
  4. Connect veterans and their families to library resources.

In order to meet these goals, participating libraries provide Veteran Resource Centers with regular open hours and staffed by trained volunteers, collections of books and other resources for veterans, websites with links to local veterans resources, and access to computer equipment for extended periods in order to complete online applications and do research.

If you want to help combat homelessness and unemployment amongst veterans, aid in their access to healthcare and higher education, or are a veteran yourself, please consider volunteering at a Veteran Resource Center. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and obtain fingerprint clearance prior to starting.

Volunteers are asked to work two days a week (preferably one weekday and Saturday) for 90 minutes to 2 hours at a time. The ideal volunteer for this assignment is familiar, or willing to become familiar, with the needs of veterans and the resources available to them, is a problem solver with excellent customer service, and is empathetic and patient.
