Following a press call this morning on procurement of body-worn cameras for all officers in the Los Angeles Police Department, Mayor Eric Garcetti released the following statement:
"I am committed to moving Los Angeles' police reform agenda ahead. Civil rights advocates have been calling for body cameras, our police union supports their use, and our officers have been testing the equipment.
I share City Council's goal to get the best possible deal on body cameras for our officers, but I am confident that we have done this the right way with the right contract. Four police divisions already have the cameras, and we need to continue building on our momentum. Our officers and the people of Los Angeles want and deserve this technology. We cannot afford to sacrifice transparency to bureaucracy." – Mayor Eric Garcetti
