The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development encourages and assists U.S. businesses to explore great opportunities beyond our borders. Los Angeles companies have a significant opportunity to increase overseas sales with 95% of the world’s population living outside the United States and with only 1% of U.S. companies exporting. Helping LA companies sell abroad not only benefits businesses’ bottom line, but also helps the economy grow and lifts the wages of our citizens.
Trade is critical to the success of many sectors of the U.S. economy, and it accounts for one of Los Angeles’ largest industries. But many companies believe exporting is too complicated and burdensome, or are not aware of export and financing services available.
The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development is working to reverse this trend, with initiatives such as the inception of the Mayor’s Export Council, an advisory group comprised of top executives from LA companies currently exporting, the Mayor’s Export Program, aimed at providing education, guidance and resources to LA companies, and by leveraging the well-established relationships with the Los Angeles Regional Export Council (LARExC), the U.S. Department of Commerce, the California Centers for International Trade Development (CITD), the California Manufacturing Technology Consulting (CMTC) and our City-owned assets such as LAX and the Port of LA - we are helping local businesses expand their international presence.
